A True 242 Degree

On December 28^th 1989 we at lodge Houstoun St Johnstone were witness to a very special and some what unique event  ….an event which is unlikely to be seen again in our mother lodge or indeed very few lodges any where in the world .

On the evening in question a F.C. degree was conferred on Two young Lewis of the lodge, Brothers Allan Stobo Jr and Gordon Duff .

The obligation was administered by the then R.W.M. Brother John Flanagan who was assisted in the ceremonial of the degree by Brother’s Mark Woodger P.M William Lennon PM  and James Gage our Sword Bearer .  Nothing unusual in that…. except that Brother Mark , William and James who between them  had a combined age of Two Hundred and Forty Two, the same number as our lodge on the roll of the G.L.O.S. carried out the degree in such a dignified manner that, we , who were in attendance that evening failed to realise the full  significance of the occasion. 

Brother Mark , William and James were each individually respected  and were held in high esteem by the brethren of Lodge Houstoun St Johnstone so much so that they were referred to…..  by the collective designate of “ last of the summer wine” …. Yes Brethren the year of  1989 was a great “vintage” here in 242 .
